It is almost never necessary to reformat a computer for a virus. A competent technician has the know how and skill to remove a virus with your data intact in almost all cases.
The next time your tech tells you they have to reformat your computer for a virus, take it somewhere else.
On buying a new computer:
Places such as Best Buy offer "geek squad" service to "optimize" your new computer, telling you how fast it's going to run after purchasing this extra service.
This, for the most part, would be classified as doing nothing for something. In most cases this service is completely unecessary. What usually happens here is that they will uninstall many of the bloated programs that manufacturer's put on a new computer in order to get you to try the software and hopefully buy it. You can easily do this yourself by going to the control panel, and add remove programs and uninstalling anything you are sure you don't want or need. Anything you are unsure of, just search in google to see what it does and make your determination from that.
Other things included in this "service" include disk defragmentation. You can also easily do this yourself by right clicking any hard drive in "my computer" and choosing properties. From there you can go to the tools tab and defragment. It's a good idea to do this every month or so.
In short, save your money, these services rarely do enough to actually speed up the computer and anything they do can be accomplished by any competent computer user.
Phishing:
"or there's a sucker born every minute"
Phishing is the modern day scam artists way of bilking an innocent computer user out of his hard earned cash. You've all seen these emails, they range from something utterly ridiculous such as the african prince that needs you to hold his money for him, to the more sublime such as an email from your credit card company that requires you to login to your account as it may have been breached.
The simple rule to follow with email to avoid getting scammed is absolutely never click on a link in an email even if it appears to be from a company you do business with that wants you to enter any personal information. it is almost always a scam. Scammers can easily setup a website that looks exactly like the target company, even with a web address that may only be one letter in difference. Once you enter your information they have it and can do as they please and it's almost always impossible to catch and prosecute these criminals and even less likely you'll get any of your money back.
If you get an email from your credit card that wants you to enter info, open your browser and manually type in their address.
